It Takes a Winding Road

In the heart of this old valley
There’s a vein of water flowing
It breaks between the hills
And then keeps going
In the shade of weeping willows
You can snake along forever
Just take the winding road that hugs the river

She and I would go out driving
We would ride by that way often
Beneath the April sun
The fields would soften
We would lie on nature’s blanket
Our bodies wound together
Just like the winding road that hugs the river

The river’s force has cut its course
A hundred crooked miles
It curves across the landscape
In a thousand frowns and smiles
The winding road, it doesn’t show
What waits around the bend
As far as we’ve been down it
We’ve never found the end

On a morning we were married
Our vows of love were spoken
I promised that her heart would not be broken
She said, “I will be faithful
And follow you wherever
I'll be the winding road that hugs the river”

The river’s force has cut its course
A hundred crooked miles
It curves across the landscape
In a thousand frowns and smiles
The winding road, it doesn’t show
What waits around the bend
As far as we’ve been down it
We’ve never found the end

In the heart of this old valley
There’s a vein of water flowing
It breaks between the hills
And then keeps going
If you want to find it
There is a way to get there
Just take the winding road that hugs the river
It takes a winding road to hug a river
