Troubled Shores

I’ve been standing on these troubled shores
Staring out across a troubled sea
And the pounding of these waves
Is the sound that my heart makes
Breaking deep inside of me

Was a time I won’t forget
Saying goodbye while the cold sun set
You were gone before I knew
Just what it was I loved in you
And the chill of that cathedral light
Would keep me driving south all night

Now I’m standing on these troubled shores
Staring out across a troubled sea
And the pounding of these waves
Is the sound that my heart makes
Breaking deep inside of me

As I face the wind
And the tears begin
There’s so much I didn’t say
Now the pure white sand
Slips through my hand
And my words just blow away

On this Alabama coast
With the gulls and the clouds
I can feel you close
I believe your spirit rides
On every white horse
Of the Gulf Stream tides
And I’m waiting for this storm to clear
As if suddenly I’ll find you here

I’ve been standing on these troubled shores
Staring out across a troubled sea
And the pounding of these waves
Is the sound that my heart makes
Breaking deep inside of me
Breaking deep inside of me
